ALL THE SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMME ACTION POINTS

Production in Austria

In over 40 years, Molto Luce has grown from a retailer into a manufacturer of successful luminaires – with a company that now operates successfully in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Italy emerging from the initial idea. Our production is 70% in-house, with the major share of the value chain being in Austria, securing 420 jobs in Austria and 480 throughout Europe.

Nevertheless, just like the entire electrical and electronic industry, we also source components from all over the world. Having said this, we ensure that labour standards are complied with and first-class quality is assured through our local employees.

In a constantly changing world, it is essential to have the courage to break new ground and actively shape change. Integrating sustainability as an indispensable part of the company’s philosophy is vital today. Our employees are the heart of Molto Luce and we are proud to be a reliable employer in the region. We also attach great importance to the fact that the major share of our value chain is in our own country.

PEOPLE.POWER.PLANET. Programme

At Molto Luce, we translate the principles of environment, social and governance into our People.Power.Planet. sustainability programme. We address the three pillars of sustainability and actively support our team, our economic strength and our planet.

Each of these pillars includes a number of objectives and principles which we intend to achieve step by step through our action plan with a variety of measures.

We recognise the urgent need and challenges of sustainable management and are determined to act proactively. This recognition drives us to develop and implement innovative measures. As a result, we are using our creativity and our technical expertise to fulfil our responsibility. And at the same time, we are learning a lot about it and in fact yes, we are having fun with this exciting development.

ESG Reporting

ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) reporting may be a buzzword, but for us it’s more than that. We see it as an opportunity to seriously address our responsibilities towards the environment, society and stakeholders. For this reason, we have invested in two innovative software tools: firstly, to calculate our LCA analyses internally and secondly to collect our ESG data efficiently and analyse it too.

The LCA tool is the basis for our future environmental product declarations, while the ESG software is the basis for the sustainability report. The tools show us where our levers are to reduce carbon emissions and to shift our focus to how we can establish effective sustainable measures in our processes.

We see sustainability as a continuous process and recognize the responsibility to take further measures and constantly improve our strategies to achieve our long-term goals.

Customer expectations

Two years ago, when we established the sustainability department at Molto Luce, we were unaware of the speed at which customer requirements on this subject were increasing. Almost every tender today requires information on carbon footprint, recycling percentage, repairability and return options.

These growing expectations have led us to invest more in developing sustainable solutions.

The major feat will lie in reconciling the seemingly contrasting trends towards greater sustainability and price neutrality. But we are investing a lot of brain power and creativity in this topic. And when we roll up our sleeves with resolute determination, a great deal is possible.

Equal opportunities

Our employees come from all corners of the world and speak an impressive variety of languages – often more than us “locals”. And in fact, they often get along better with each other, which is incredibly enriching in our everyday work. Whether it’s communicating with a supplier’s lorry driver at the goods entrance or scheduling deliveries of our luminaires to faraway countries – their skills make us strong.

Passion for a task leads to satisfaction and competence, and ultimately to success! And even though it should go without saying: Yes, at our company, women and men receive equal pay for the same job and qualifications.

WHP measures

Our goal is to maintain or improve our employees’ mental and physical health. We aim to create working conditions that enable our employees to build resilience and awareness and to maintain them in the long term through training courses on health-related topics and a supportive working environment.

Our holistic approach focuses on involving our employees from the outset, so that we can create tailored measures.

We are committed to sustainably strengthening the mental and physical health of our employees! To this end, we implement programs and measures that enable our employees to build and maintain resilience in the long term, helping them to successfully cope with both professional and personal challenges.

Research

In a world that is increasingly focused on sustainability, we are constantly looking for energy-efficient solutions. Our research helps us develop products that are not only high-performing but also environmentally friendly. For the first time, matrix technology allows us to direct light only where it is really needed, thus reducing unnecessary energy consumption.

Our research enables us to take advantage of the latest technological advances and integrate them into our products, thus setting trends in the lighting industry.

Matrix technology has become one of the biggest game changers in the lighting industry in recent years. Inspired by the car headlight industry, we used this newly developed technology for the first time in lighting for workplace areas.

Supplier management

Our effective supplier management is supported by a local employee. For example, we work closely with our suppliers and conduct regular inspections and training to ensure that suppliers meet our requirements.

As a result, we can ensure products of the highest quality and at the same time promote fair and safe working conditions.

With our careful support of suppliers and our direct presence on the ground, we ensure that our raw and auxiliary materials are not only of high quality, but also produced under fair working conditions. Our aim is to produce excellent materials while maintaining sustainable and transparent partnerships with our suppliers as equals.

X-Change Technology

Our excellent X-Change technology provides the solution for an easily replaceable chip-on-board LED module to ensure maximum flexibility. Should defects occur, if a change in the light colour is desired or if a considerable improvement in energy efficiency can be achieved due to technological advances: we swap the bulb without having to replace the entire luminaire. This extends the service life and reduces unnecessary costs and resources.

This pioneering technology was awarded the prestigious German Ecodesign Award in 2022 – a testament to its innovation and sustainable approach. Additionally, we now offer tool-free replaceable drivers, enabling even greater adaptability and expandability. This provides our customers with added value and highlights our commitment to durable, sustainable lighting solutions.

Lighting refurbishment

Huge cost savings can be achieved by switching to an energy-efficient and low-maintenance lighting system. It can even be worth converting older LEDs to modern LED lighting systems. Modern lighting systems require considerably fewer luminaires for the same light output and have a longer service life compared to outdated systems.

By integrating intelligent sensor technology, you can also sustainably reduce your carbon emissions.

more about it

Since February 2023, the EU has been phasing in the ban on marketing fluorescent lighting. It is important to us to prepare our customers for future-proof lighting systems and to assist them with this.

Scorecard & Ecodesign Guideline

In our Planet pillar, we have defined three main objectives: to conserve resources, save energy and reduce impacts on the climate. To take these principles into account in our product development process right from the start, we have introduced an internal scorecard.

We use roughly 90 criteria to assess to what extent our products are already meeting the set targets or, if they are not already, how we can achieve this in the future. We developed the Molto Ecodesign Guideline for this purpose.

The scorecard is applied during the product design phase, as this is where the best opportunities exist to conserve resources and save energy. As the project progresses, the evaluation becomes increasingly precise. Our goal is twofold: to identify levers for resource and energy savings and to build expertise in the field of ecodesign through in-depth engagement with the topic.

Sensors

Most carbon emissions from a luminaire, namely 90%, occur during its useful life. This is also the phase where we can deliver the greatest cost savings to our customers. Even switching to LED lighting can significantly reduce energy consumption, and the integration of sensor solutions such as daylight and presence controls can reduce energy consumption by up to 90%.

We have already started a number of projects and are proud of our references.

We have already implemented a number of sensor projects and are proud of our references. My role is to support our customers in finding the most energy-efficient solution. I particularly enjoy witnessing our customers' reactions and enthusiasm when they discover the impressive savings potential of our sensors.

Waste separation

Waste separation is standard and goes without saying nowadays. Nevertheless, rigorous analysis is required to continually check the efficiency and identify any weaknesses. It is equally important to raise awareness for the importance of waste separation.

These efforts not only enable us to save costs, but also to return valuable resources effectively to the recycling process.

We have examined the issue of waste separation more closely and developed an eye-catching guidance system. This simple and above all visually appealing solution speeds up sorting and minimises misunderstandings. In addition, our employees are so aware of this issue that they draw attention to any shortcomings and we are constantly improving as a result.

Head of production logistics

Life cycle analysis

Life cycle analyses look at a product’s entire value chain, from design and production, to packaging and transportation, and finally the use phase and end of the product life cycle. We analyse our products using appropriate LCA software, following the standards for life cycle impact assessment, EN15804+A2 and PSR-0014, to obtain standardised environmental product declarations (EPDs).

We develop this model in-house, as this is the only way we can identify our levers and opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and other impact indicators such as material consumption.

Our goal is to ensure the comparability of our products in terms of resource consumption and to establish ecodesign as a key criterion in our customers' purchasing decisions. We are aware that the ecological impact of a product is largely defined during the design phase. That’s why we specifically rely on tools such as the Scorecard and the Ecodesign Guideline, which help us address sustainability early in the product development process. These tools support us in developing sustainable solutions that not only reduce resource consumption but also meet the demands and expectations of our customers.

Photovoltaics

The installation of a photovoltaic system is a typical project that offers both economic and environmental benefits. All the available roof areas at our production site in Weißkirchen are now fitted with solar panels.

These panels now generate one third of the electricity required for our production in Weißkirchen. Due to the success of our panels in Weißkirchen, we will be covering our head office in Wels with photovoltaic modules in summer 2024.

On sunny days we produce more than we need for our production. We want to make efficient use of this surplus, which is why our electric car chargers are connected to the photovoltaic system. The charging speed is increased by default in the event of surplus. But we don’t leave anyone in the lurch – every user can of course adapt the charging speed individually.

Head of Electronics Development Department

E-mobility

Given the trend towards decarbonising the transport sector and the increasing need to regulate emissions, electric vehicles are a long-term solution that can help companies prepare for future requirements.

This is because electric vehicles do not produce direct emissions during operation, especially if the electricity comes from renewable energy sources.

Electric vehicles are a very attractive lever for companies to generate a win-win situation. Thanks to less maintenance costs, lower energy costs per kilometre and attractive tax advantages, the total costs are significantly lower compared to internal-combustion engine vehicles. As a result, the company, driver and above, our planet benefit.

Retro-Fitting Kits

Retrofit solutions offer the advantage of retrofitting existing luminaires cost-effectively and easily with energy-efficient, durable and environmentally friendly light sources. The basis for this is our interchangeable light source, which can be replaced by anyone and is available in the lengths 600, 900, 1200 and 1500 mm in accordance with the T5 versions. There are different light colours from 2700 K to 4000 K and options for CRI 80 and CRI 90.

The product is available with dark raster, basic raster, PMMA opal cover and microprisma, and offers various beam angles. The housing is also available in different colours. Since the new light source is dimmable, it allows for additional energy savings. When combined with a Molto Luce luminaire, a motion swarm sensor is also available.

The replacement of light sources allows us to make an active contribution to climate action and we help our customers to save costs – we have already been able to prove this in some great reference projects. Every time we replace a fluorescent bulb, we are setting an example, and lots of small actions can make a big difference.

Occupational Health and Safety

We adhere to the highest occupational safety standards, promote safe behavior through training, and collaborate with external experts.

Safety representatives support us, and an open reporting culture enables continuous improvement.

The reduction to two accidents in 2023 is a positive sign and confirms the chosen path of further strengthening existing safety measures. A key component of this success is the continuous training of employees and the targeted focus on occupational safety. This aims to ensure that awareness of safe working practices continues to grow and that accidents are avoided as much as possible in the future.

Career Management

Our career management includes increasing training hours, implementing high-potential programs, providing comprehensive training for our apprentices, and conducting regular employee reviews.

A particular goal is to specifically encourage and support women so that they can fully realize their career potential and increasingly take on leadership roles.

Our training program is not a one-size-fits-all approach but is designed to meet employees exactly where they are and provide them with what they currently need. This creates the foundation for tackling tasks with motivation and enthusiasm and achieving success together.

Customer Health

Our products also contribute to creating pleasant environments in residential areas, shopping centers, and office buildings, leading to increased satisfaction and a positive feeling among people.

Lighting solutions such as Dim2Warm or Tunable White offer the ability to replicate the natural light cycle, which is particularly beneficial for individuals who spend their entire day in artificially lit spaces.

Since the body requires sufficient light during the day and lower blue light levels in the evening to regulate melatonin levels, intelligent control of light color and intensity can help prevent negative effects such as sleep disorders or fatigue.

Our lighting solutions thus contribute not only to a comfortable atmosphere but also to the health of users.

Christian Hofwimmer
Head of Product Management

Customer Satisfaction

Our products meet the highest safety and quality standards through rigorous testing, regular audits, and external certifications.

Resource-efficient processes promote sustainability, while our service center provides quick solutions to customer concerns.

Quality is our top priority, which is why we focus on direct communication and the consistent reduction of complaints. Every luminaire undergoes thorough electronic and mechanical quality control before packaging to ensure that only flawless products leave our facility and meet our customers' expectations.

Compliance and Risk Management

Molto Luce carefully complies with legal, regulatory, and ethical requirements.

A Code of Conduct, regular training sessions, and our risk management system promote integrity, transparency, and safety in all processes.

The Code of Conduct forms the foundation for all business activities and serves as a guideline for responsible actions, both within the company and towards external partners and society.

Renewable Energy

Through investments in photovoltaics, the transition from gas to district heating, electricity from hydropower, and the promotion of e-mobility, Molto Luce is consistently reducing its CO₂e emissions.

In addition, the investment in further photovoltaic systems is being evaluated.

A clear dashboard in our application helps us create transparency and visualize energy flows in real time. It allows us to monitor not only large systems but also many smaller ones, which can collectively cause significant consumption. These smaller consumption points are analyzed in relation to the total energy demand, enabling us to identify the delta between overall usage and measured individual consumptions and to derive optimization measures.

Head of Process Engineering

Goals

Our People.Power.Planet program aims to implement impactful measures that have a sustainable and positive influence on employees (People), the company (Power), and the environment (Planet).

Through targeted analyses and the dedicated efforts of our teams, we create a solid foundation to make our sustainability goals measurable and tangible.

Sustainability for us is more than just a loose collection of measures. It is based on a structured program with clearly defined goals. The success of this program critically depends on the active participation of many people – much has already been achieved thanks to their support.
